Wedding cake don’ts every bride needs to know.
At Food Matters, we know just how important your wedding cake can be – the centre of your dessert menu and the star of the show when it comes to that first bite of cake as husband and wife. That’s why we love making dream weddings cakes for our clients.
When it comes to catering for your wedding, especially when it’s about choosing the cake (or even baking it yourself), we’ve got lots of advice – and tons of experience! In today’s post, we’d like to share another slice of our wedding cake wisdom – what not to do when it comes to your wedding cake.
Wedding cake don’ts from our expert team
1. Don’t skimp on the frosting
When it comes to modern day wedding cakes, there are so many frosting options that you’ll be spoilt for choice. Whether it’s butter cream icing, ganache, or fondant, you want to make sure it looks and tastes delicious. Plastic-tasting, bland frosting is a no-no that will ruin your cake.
2. Don’t try to do it all yourself
While you might be a super baker, baking your own wedding cake can add unnecessary pressure to the run-up to your big day. Working with a professional caterer will help ensure your wedding cake is baked, put together, decorated (and delivered!) without a hitch. A professional caterer will understand the necessary requirements to create your perfect wedding cake, from what ingredients to use to how to get it to your venue in one piece.
3. Don’t forget to let your cake shine
No hiding this beauty in a dark corner. You’ve spent a lot of time and energy on your wedding cake so make sure it stands out. From a beautiful display table or stand to that photograph-must ‘cutting the cake’ moment, let your wedding cake take pride of place in your wedding menu. Let all your guests see and enjoy this special treat.
4. Don’t feel you have to have a traditional cake
Not a fan of marzipan and fruit cake or of cake at all? The truth is that it’s your day and you don’t have to have a wedding cake... or at least not a traditional wedding cake. As it’s a very special day, it is a good idea to have a dessert centre piece or a stand-out treat at your wedding but you can get as creative as you like in this space. Speak to your caterer about a stunning cheese tower, served with dried fruit and crackers or a pretty macaroon stand, or opt for mini themed cupcakes – one delicious bite for every guest.
5. Don’t forget to enjoy your cake as a couple
A wedding can be a busy affair and many couples report not being able to sit down to eat anything at all during the event. Besides a bite at the cake cutting, make sure you have time to sit down together as newlyweds and enjoy your cake properly. Ask your caterer to keep some aside for you and share it at the end of the night or with your post-wedding breakfast.
With the right help, your wedding cake can be a dessert dream come true. At Food Matters, we know that nothing tops off a wedding like a beautiful cake made with love. Let us handle your cake from start to finish – we can help you with design ideas and creation, as well as safe delivery to your venue on the big day.
